Description:
The Class 489s were converted in 1984 from ex Class 414 2-HAP driving motor cars, into driving luggage vans to operate on the Gatwick Express. These acted as driving van trailers on the London end of the Gatwick express and usually operated with a rake of specially converted MK2F coaches and Class 73s. The last 489s were withdrawn from service in 2005 when they were replaced by Class 460s.

Network Rail returned four Class 489s to service in 2006, for use as third rail rail de-icing and load bank units, in 2011 three Class 489s were refurbished. In 2012 Network rail scrapped it's fourth unit.

Four Class 489s have been preserved.

This model has been depicted in it's 1994 - 2005 condition.

Gatwick Express Class 489s operated as either a 5 car set as:

Class 489, MK2 FO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, Class 73

Or formed as an 8 car set during the Summer Months:

Class 489, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 FO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, MK2 TSO, Class 73
